Alleyways with Deborah Zhang

Our downtown alleyways has the intense character and grungeyness as you would expect. Since most of my wandering has been on sidewalks and big streets, it was a truly different experience walking down the alleyways. The smell, the tight space, the uneven ground, the graffiti on the walls. Periodically I would become spooked by the ambience that I would take a quick glance behind me. As I explored more of these backstreets, I felt more at ease and documented the unique textures and art in my photoshoot location book.

In hindsight, it probably wasn't the best idea to bring someone you just met to shoot at one of these grungey alleyways.

Last month, I met up with Deborah Zhang (@deborah.zhang) for some coffee (she had 2) and a photoshoot. Not only is she addicted to coffee like me, she is a very positive and adventurous person :). Always blessed to meet awesome like-minded individuals.

When someone looks through my photoshoot location book, they tend to gravitate towards picking the rooftop ones. Not Deborah though. The textures and colours of two specific alleyways fascinated her. In the end we decided to do 2 outfits at each alleyway.

When you're doing a shoot outdoors, you never know what could happen. It is an uncontrolled environment. While we were shooting at the first location, we had to stop several times due to a garbage truck making its way through the tight backstreet. At least the garbageman liked what we were doing - he gave us the thumbs up before he drove off.

Below are the results of my shoot with Deborah. Make sure to give her a follow @deborah.zhang!
